Rando Maserati for reading.
There is a seat that may open up for my city-county council district (Indianapolis, District 25, if you’re curious) and I really want to just go for it. I figure I can easily fund a campaign, but I’m not sure if I stand any chance at all. I mostly just want to run for the thrill of being a politician (What can I say? I kinda enjoy schmoozing.) There also really isn’t any other way to start being a politician than, well, attempting to hold a political office.
A few reservations I have myself:
1) I’m a 20 year old in college, so I’m kinda young. The youngest councilman we’ve had was 24.
2) I pretty much have to run as a Republican if I want to stand a chance, but my political views on various topics don’t match any party.
3) I have no political experience at all, though I am pursuing a poly-sci degree.
What do you guys think? Should I just wait until I’ve graduated college?
And if you are in my district (it’s basically the southeastern-most corner of Marion county), let me know.

Do you have time for that? You’re still in school after all.

Most likely. It’s a part-time gig, so it’s a once or twice a week thing (depending on committee membership), no earlier than 5:30PM. I’d easily be able to pack in time to talk to constituents and such as well.

Oppositelock may consider endorsing you if you can score the moderators Indianapolis 500 tickets.

I don’t even think I can score
myself
500 tickets. The 100th running thing means that all the good seats sold as soon as they went on sale.

Can you at least get Pacers tickets with the position? If not, why even run?

The extortion and lobbying begins! It’s practically House of Cards up in here.

Stay in school. It’s attitudes like this toward politics that land us with terribly inefficient governments.

I won’t be dropping out of school or anything. It’s a part-time job (only pays $16k a year, which was a recent raise from $10k a year) meeting once or twice a week in the evening.
On the politics front, I figure that I can probably take an Eisenhower approach and try to be as center as possible. It’s just not possible to win as a third-party or write-in, and most people just check the “Vote for all the Republicans” box, since we’re a very conservative state.

That’s pretty much how politics works, so yeah. Luckily, my district is mostly farmers and old people, so it will be relatively easy to keep them happy.

If that’s what you’re interested in, why not? Just be prepared to deal with the public. They’re very stupid and mean.

My grandfather told stories about the homeowners’ association meetings in his neighborhood (not age limited, but most residents are elderly). They would complain about silly things, like “I hate daylight savings time because it makes it light out when I go to bed” (a valid concern, if you aren’t a retired person, I might add).

working for an architect I’ve been to a few planning / building development meetings. The dumb crap people complain about like the mail was delivered late last wednesday. Well that has nothing to do with this project....

Eh might as well wait. I think there is a lot more that goes into it than what you think. Just look at the literature that local parties send out. Unless you get the backing of the party you won’t be on the literature

Do it, it's a life experience if you don't win, i.e. Great stories thing to put on resume. If you do win, you have that and it might lead to something you like doing and make a career out of it, and end the 25 year import ban

Actually, the guy who is currently in the position ran for the Republican nomination unopposed.

I’ve been in politics professionally for 7 years. I’m 28. My advice is this: Door knock. Door knock all day, every day and even when it rains. Those who win, door knock.

Yep, put a friendly face to the name. The biggest thing is getting the people to actually go to the polls to vote for you.
